Potter's Field Academy, Gwagwalada, Nigeria – On Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, The Africa Projects Development Centre (APDC), through its flagship nutrition programme Healthy Diet for Africa (HD4A), successfully conducted its fifth community-based nutrition outreach at Potter’s Field Academy in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory. The team at the Nigerian living lab, led by Director of Programmes, Policy, and Partnerships Maaruf Yakub and Program Coordinator Engineer Tinuadeji Kohol, alongside other staff, joined forces with Senior Dietician Christopher Dafom from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital to carry out a sensitization and awareness outreach at Potter's Field Academy in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
A total of 131 students and 14 staff members participated in the interactive session, which focused on the principles of healthy diets, food diversification, appropriate meal timing, and nutritious snack options. School chefs were also trained on proper food handling and hygiene practices to ensure safety within the school kitchen environment.
In line with the practical approach to learning, the team introduced the concept of school kitchen gardens and explained their benefits, including improved access to fresh vegetables and environmental impact. A demonstration garden was planted on-site, featuring okra, spinach, moringa, and other nutrient-rich vegetables, empowering the school to adopt a “grow what you eat” model. As part of promoting food diversification, the school also received freshly harvested mushrooms, symbolizing the inclusion of non-traditional food items into everyday meals.
This outreach demonstrates APDC's commitment to evidence-based nutrition interventions that address both immediate educational needs and sustainable food systems development across Nigerian communities.
