Today marks International Youth Day 2025, and APDC Group stands proudly with the global community in celebrating this year's transformative theme: "Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond."
We recognise that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the changemakers of today. In our unwavering commitment to amplifying youth voices, APDC hosted an event at our Global Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, centred on this year's theme and highlighting the vital role young people play in translating global goals into tangible, community-driven solutions.
The event featured a compelling panel discussion, moderated by Maaruf Yakub, APDC's Director of Programmes, Policy & Partnerships. The esteemed panellists, including Jerry Tobi (Team Lead, JET Farms), Chiedozie Ojukwu (Head of Procurement), Caleb Evinemi (Lead M&E Specialist), and Ifeoma Umeania (Director of Administrative Services), sparked meaningful conversations on how youth-led efforts can drive progress. They shared insights on innovative farming, sustainable supply chains, data-driven impact, and operational support for youth initiatives and women's inclusivity. The discussion focused specifically on advancing SDGs such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Responsible Consumption (SDG 12).
The program's highlight was the culmination of our Sustathon Campaign through an inspiring pitch competition. Four exceptional groups and individuals from across Africa were provided a platform to showcase their innovative solutions addressing pressing African challenges. The competition showcased remarkable diversity, ranging from edutech platforms to plastic recycling initiatives and solar-powered incubators. Led by Engr. Patrick Tawo, Senior Manager of Knowledge Management & ICT, the presentations were evaluated by a distinguished panel, including Jack McDonald (Data Protection Officer, SMEDAN), John-Jerry Ugwu (CEO, Azolafam), and Barr. Amina Yunusa (Strategy & Operations Officer, APDC), and Caleb Evinemi (Lead M&E Consultant, APDC).
In a fiercely contested competition that demonstrated the incredible talent across our continent, Daniella Akpeji and Rahman Hassan emerged as winners, taking home a well-deserved cash prize of $200 for their groundbreaking solution.
The event concluded with a vibrant exhibition featuring products and services developed by APDC’s training beneficiaries, creating invaluable opportunities for trade and knowledge exchange within our growing community.
As we mark the 10th anniversary of the 2030 Agenda and the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth, today's significance extends far beyond celebration. With 65% of SDG targets relying on local action, our wellness sessions, networking opportunities, and strategic discussions have forged new partnerships that will fuel future progress across Africa and beyond.
To every young innovator, entrepreneur, and changemaker across Africa: your ideas, passion, and determination are actively shaping our continent's future. APDC Group stands with you, committed to providing the platforms, partnerships, and support you need to transform local actions into global impact.
Together, we're not just building businesses; we're building the sustainable tomorrow Africa deserves.
